The combination of two critical dynamics-the rapid rate of change being experienceed in today's increasingly digital world, and the lasting impact of the social and economic turmoil affecting all parts of the globe-are dramatically changing the way we communicate with one another. Printed communications, once the communications medium of choice, are rapidly being displaced by electronic communications in various forms. Emerging technologies have created an entirely new set of media sources which complete directly or indirectly with traditional printing. And the agents of change come from other forms of entertainment as well as from computer and software companies that are experimenting with new communications formats. Clearly, these new formats will have an effect on how information is produced and distributed in the future. The speed with which these changes are taking place make it imperative for document industry participants to understand and adapt to new technologies in order to effectively capitalize on emerging market opportunities.

The landscape in which publishers and suppliers to the industry operate is further being altered by the impact of technology on production and distribution techniques, including increased automation, broadbased adoption of emerging industry standards and the need to work in an increasingly diverse environment that spans a wide range of vendors, technologies and communications media.

Additionally, regulatory compliance and increasing competition have created immense challenges associated with managing content and documents that have been created and disseminated electronically across a wide variety of industries. These electronic artifacts are proliferating at a dramatic rate and the ability to quantify increased business productivity and revenue using these items has been difficult for many companies and institutions to achieve. In addition, the auditability and control of new artifacts such as instant messages and e-mail has also been providing significant compliance challenges for many organizations, consequently increasing their internal operating costs and making it difficult to adopt productivity enhancing technologies.
