EDSF and Xerox Honor Innovative, "Document" Academic Programs with 3rd Annual EDSF Excellence in Education Awards
Recipients Represent Top E-Commerce, Printing, and Graphic Communication Institutions
TORRANCE, Calif., U.S.A. (Oct. 14, 1999) - The Electronic Document Systems Foundation (EDSF) and Xerox Corporation, today announced the recipients of the 1999 EDSF Excellence in Education Awards for innovation in higher education in the document systems industry. Xerox has proudly supported EDSF and its mission for the past two years. The winners include Project 2000 at Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University; The National Association for Printing Leadership's (NAPL) Carl Didde WorkPLACEâ Program; the GRAPHIC COMM CENTRAL Project (GCC), Technology Education Program, Virginia Tech; and The Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF).
Annually, the EDSF Excellence in Education Awards honor academic and professional organizations for their
creative educational programs that address industry issues, reflect state-of-the-art technology, and benefit society and the industry.

Award Winners
Project 2000 at Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University (http://ecommerce.vanderbilt.edu/), is the recipient of the Innovation in Higher Education in the Document Systems Industry award. Directed by professors Donna Hoffman and Tom Novak, Project 2000 was founded in 1994 to study the marketing implications of commercializing the World Wide Web. In the years since, this pioneering scholarly effort has emerged as one of the premiere research centers in the world for the study of electronic commerce. The center, noted for "rubber meets the road" relevance owing to its unique collaborations with industry sponsors, conducts rigorous research on the strategic, consumer behavior, and policy issues related to the development of the Internet as a commercial medium.
The National Association for Printing Leadership's (NAPL) Carl Didde WorkPLACEâ Program is the recipient of the award for Innovation in Continuing Education in the Document Systems Industry. The program is a complete, industry-specific training program that provides employees and students with the essential skills they need to perform their jobs efficiently, effectively, and productively. WorkPLACEâ is comprised of four, fully-developed training courses that cover math, critical thinking and problem-solving, communications and the
graphic arts process, as those skills that relate to the tasks workers are called upon to perform every day on the job.
GRAPHIC COMM CENTRAL (GCC), directed by Mark Sanders, associate professor in the Technology Education Program at Virginia Tech, is the recipient of the Innovation in Online Education and Training in the Document Systems Industry award. GCC is the online educational resource for the printing and publishing industry. GCC provides instant access to an array of educational and human resources for teachers, students, industry trainers, and others interested in graphic communications education. In addition, GCC offers a listserv for daily electronic conversation among graphic communication educators and those in the industry who share an interest in education.
The Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF), under the direction of Jim Workman, is the recipient of the award for Innovation in Professional Growth and Development in the Document Systems Industry. As the leading resource for technical information and services for the graphic communications industry, GATF offers 33 scheduled workshops on different industry topics. Orientation and advanced level workshops are offered in a variety of areas such as digital prepress, offset press, and production operations. Last year, GATF conducted 112 hands-on industry workshops at its technical facility, equipped with more than US $25 million in prepress, press, and postpress equipment.
The award recipients will be honored during Xplor International's 20th Global Electronic Document
Systems Conference & Exhibit in Los Angeles, Calif., at the LA Convention Center, Sunday, Oct. 31, from 4 - 6 p.m.
Awards Selection
The awards selection committee, comprised of leaders representing the document systems industry and top academic institutions, seek programs from around the world that enhance the effectiveness of education-both in the industry and in the workplace-and contribute to the teaching process and academic growth. The awards are divided into four categories, including higher education, continuing education, online education, and professional growth and development. Recipients of the awards promote excellence in the art, science, and profession of teaching document systems curriculum. They also reflect a leading edge in technology and address the most current needs of the industry. In addition, the winning programs prepare students to contribute to the future of the document systems industry. EDSF Excellence in Education Award recipients offer curriculum in a university, college, community college, trade or occupational school, or the equivalent.
